By Sarah McCallisterAssociated PressMore than 40 barbecue joints have closed or are planning to close in Texas as part of the state’s economic recession.
The number of restaurant closings in Texas is up about 25% from last year, according to the Texas Association of Business, which tracks the industry.
The association’s annual report found that the industry saw a 12% decline in the number of new restaurants opened.
The report also noted that the number in the industry is up only 2% from the last year.
In addition, there are more than 7,000 restaurants that have closed since last year in the state.
Some of the restaurants have been shuttered because of financial or other problems, but others are just not profitable.
One restaurant, the Red Rock Grill, is slated to close next year, said the restaurant’s owner, Greg Bostock.
The restaurant is also facing financial challenges and has been unable to stay open.
Bostock said he’s been negotiating with the state about a potential new location.
He said the state has offered to keep the restaurant open as long as it can offer a better deal.
But, he said, there is a chance he could be forced to close because of the recession.
He doesn’t have enough money to make it through the winter and expects to close this summer.
“It’s just hard to make ends meet,” he said.
Some have begun closing after struggling to find a job.
A Texas native, Bostocks mother started the Red Rocks Grill with her brother and father.
“We’re very proud of our history,” Bostocking said.
“I was born in Red Rock.
I love Texas and it’s always been my home.”
He said he plans to stay in Texas and open another restaurant if he can find a new job.
Bustles owner, Michael Bostack, said he is also trying to find other restaurants to open.
The Red Rock is the first restaurant in Texas that opened in decades and Bostacks family has had a long history with the restaurant.
Burtons mom is the only one of his seven children who still works at the restaurant, he told the Associated Press.
“If you’re looking for a job, we have a job,” Burtocks said.
