Texas has always been a hotbed of barbecue, and the Top 5 barbecue states by state are the same as they were a decade ago.
But now, in 2017, we’re looking at a shift in flavor.
The BBQ Association has found that more and more barbecue restaurants are moving to the South and the Midwest, and that the Midwest is becoming a barbecue destination of choice for more and longer than ever before.
Here’s how Axios pieced together the data:BARBOROUGH, N.C. — The barbecue industry’s influence on the South is undeniable, and barbecue is one of the most influential industries in the state, says Amy Rinaldi, a professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who has studied the barbecue industry.
That influence is evident in barbecue restaurants opening across the country and in the region’s appetite for barbecue in general.”BARCBELLA is one place where you really have to go to to get a good barbecue,” Rinaldis says.
“BARCKEYS are everywhere.
The people who are buying barbecue here are just getting a taste of what barbecue is all about.”
The BBQ Society of Southern California, a non-profit organization of local barbecue and restaurant owners, has hosted barbecue dinners for local families and celebrities, and a nationwide BBQ Fest is taking place this year in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Southern BBQ industry is also expanding.
Last year, the BBQ Society held its third annual Southern BBQ Festival, and it is looking to expand to Las Vegas this year.
The BBQ Association, which is based in Los Angeles, has long encouraged the Southern barbecue community to build on its tradition of hospitality, but the popularity of barbecue in the Midwest has sparked a new wave of barbecue-focused restaurants in recent years.
The Top 5 BBQ states by barbecue-based restaurant population, according Axios data, are: Alabama, Arizona and Florida, which have the highest barbecue populations in the country, according, the 2015 BBQ Association.
Texas is at No. 2, followed by Louisiana at No 4 and Georgia at No 6.
Louisiana has become the barbecue capital of the country in recent months, and its barbecue is being celebrated across the nation.
Alabama, which has long been the barbecue hot spot, has grown to become a barbecue-loving destination for its Southern roots.
The state is home to five BBQ restaurants, including two new ones opening this year, and one is opening a location in downtown Birmingham.
Louisiana’s barbecue has been embraced by the culinary world, and has helped draw a new generation of Southern barbecue lovers.
It is also a barbecue hotspot for Southern stars, including Bobby Flay, whose restaurants have been in the U.S. for nearly 40 years.
Florida, which recently surpassed New Jersey as the BBQ state with the most barbecue restaurants, has seen its barbecue population increase by nearly 20 percent from 2015 to 2017.
Texas, which remains the barbecue state with more barbecue-restaurant locations than any other state, is at 11, followed closely by Louisiana with 9.
And New Hampshire, the barbecue-centric state with three new BBQ restaurants opening this fall, is next at 9.
Rinaldias says the barbecue culture is changing, and in her time working in the industry, she has seen the changing tastes and flavors of barbecue.
“It’s not just that it’s cool now, it’s like, ‘Wow, I’m just going to go back to my roots,'” she says.
The new barbecue-driven restaurants are coming out of the South, and are coming to New York and Los Angeles.
The chefs and restaurant staff are coming back from the Midwest.
And the barbecue is coming back to the city of Atlanta.

In 2018, the first annual BBQ Awards will be held in New York City on April 12.
In 2019, the annual awards will be hosted in New Orleans.
And in 2020, the awards will take place in Atlanta, and then in Chicago.
